As an author, the process of writing is both a joy and a challenge. Add three dogs into the mix—Miki, Maddie, and Gus—and it becomes crazy! It's an adventure filled with love, interruptions, and a lot of chaos. Many people ask me how I manage to write with my furry companions always wanting something from me. I tell them it is sheer determination. So, if you're interested in a glimpse into my world of balancing creative work with the delightful chaos of being a dog mom, read on.
The Morning Routine: Setting the Stage
My day begins with the three amigos following me out the door as I stumble out onto our screened patio with my laptop to check emails while I wake up with my first cup of coffee. Miki, the mini Australian Shepherd is content to lie on the cool concrete floor while the two little ones hop up on the furniture and stretch out for their morning nap. Mind you, they just got up from a full night's sleep. I would like to say the morning routine is crucial for setting the stage for a productive day, but that's a bunch of bull. I jump to their tune. So, after they've tired of their morning nap, they insist on going inside for breakfast whether I'm ready or not. And when I say they insist, have you ever known anyone who lives with a Pomeranian? They are independent, barking fiends who will stop at nothing to get what they want. We have two of the little...darlings. :)
Embracing the Interruptions
Despite my best efforts, interruptions are inevitable. Miki is thirteen so while she might not want to play fetch, she has an old lady bladder if you get my meaning. Maddie, the brown and white Pom is always wanting something. And when she wants something, you will get it for her or you will not get one thing done. You think I jest? I am dead serious. Now, for all of you out there who naysay dog treats as processed tidbits of mystery ingredients, we use only organically grown baby carrots as snacks. My dogs love them! And that brings us to gus who sits on the back of the sofa staring out the window that overlooks the backyard and waits for his chance to sound the alarm. "Mom, Mom, look! There's a butterfly and it just landed on our fence. Let me at 'em. I'll run 'em off!" It was really cute the first couple of hundred times he did it, but now...I use it to take a break and recharge. After all, I've been working all of fifteen minutes. It's time to take a step back and try to plan the rest of my day.
Creating a Dog-Friendly Writing Space
One strategy that has worked wonders is creating a dog-friendly writing space. My office is upstairs on the second floor and every pooch has its own special piece of real estate. As I said before, Gus sits on the back of the sofa and stares out the window. Maddie has a cave under my desk. It's an oversized cat bed with a single door and a lot of room inside. She loves hiding in dark and cozy spaces. And remember, Miki is an old lady so she has hot flashes. (I'm assuming) She sleeps on the tile floor in the bathroom next to my office. Food and water close are by and now is when I get most of my work done. When the house is quiet and the dogs are content to nap because they aren't afraid they are missing something.
Establishing a Writing Schedule
Consistency is key. I’ve established a writing schedule that takes into account my dogs’ needs. Just kidding. It wouldn't matter what my schedule was. They have their own schedule and they are obviously in charge. During the day, I work as hard as I can when they are quiet and content because at five o'clock, my husband comes home from work and now there's a whole new set of expectations. "What's for dinner?"
Finding Inspiration in My Dogs
Miki, Maddie, and Gus are more than just my pets—they’re my inspiration. Their playful antics, loyalty, and unconditional love often find their way into my stories. If you've read any of my books, you know there's always horses and dogs in there somewhere between the pages. Animals always add a touch of authenticity and warmth to any story. Think Lassie and My Friend Flicka and Black Beauty and Old Yeller. Who can resist?
It's A Heartfelt Partnership
Writing amidst the presence of Miki, Maddie, and Gus is a unique experience. They add a layer of companionship to my life. While writing with three dogs can be challenging, it’s also incredibly rewarding. They are my biggest fans, always there to offer a wagging tail or a comforting nuzzle. They cheered me on when I sold my first book and they commiserated with me when I got my first rejection letter. Together, we create a happy blend of creativity and companionship that makes my writing process feel complete.
So, to all the writers out there juggling pets and prose, remember to cherish the moments they demand your attention. These furry friends are not just distractions—they’re a vital part of your creative process, bringing joy, inspiration, and a whole lot of love to your writing life.
All our best to you and yours,
Peggy and Nikki
